Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure, the Ford family was taken care of by her mom, grandmother and godparents. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she was not a fit. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot on her third attempt, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her debut on television in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Tate would also frequently work in the theatre, and later joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate's stand-up humor, which she began adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining the attention of her peers.
